Duke of Edinburgh Award

#dofe

If you’ve never heard of the Duke of Edinburgh Award then read on.

A flexible programme that helps to develop young people for life and work, the numbers speak for themselves: 93% of participants feel that DofE has helped them to work in a team and 84% feel that they have become a more responsible person.

It’s fun too!

Imagine walking up and down mountains for a few days with everything on your back and a group of friends.

The duke of Edinburgh award has 4 sections, (5 if you do Gold award)

For Bronze and Silver:

  • A chance to volunteer somewhere local for a short period of time
  • Taking part in a sports team or activity
  • Learning a new skill
  • An expedition in the countryside that involves carrying a tent, stove, food, clothes etc for a number of days with a team

For gold award:

  • A chance to volunteer somewhere local for a short period of time
  • Taking part in a sports team or activity
  • Learning a new skill
  • An expedition in the countryside that involves carrying a tent, stove, food, clothes etc for a number of days with a team
  • AND a residential away with a group, taking part in activities and fun

Many scout groups or schools do this as an extra curriculum activity as well as many colleges in the form of enrichment and skill work towards CVs and University applications. So if you’re interested, ask at school or in a youth group and join in now!

Unfortunately, covid ruined my dofe and I didn't get to do the expedition, which would have been the best bit! I want to do silver, but as you can do it up to the age of twenty five, I might wait till covid has finished. But, if you do it with covid, you still get an achievement award as you did the other sections x

Cheese

My cousin just did gold and now she walks 4 miles to school each day!!!!!!!

Seriously if youre worried about what its going to be oike just go for it. I was forced into it because it's compulsory at my school 🙄 but seriously its great. Get a good volunteerimg place (I did my local library), skill, try something new, it'll be fun i promise. Sport- I did hockey which i hates so try something you will enjoy. The expedition is tough and you will want to give up I can promise you that but keep pushing the feeling at the end is amazing (oh and think yourself lucky that you get a tent beacuse my school is the ONLY SCHOOL JN THE COUNTRY that uses survival bags instead of tents 😅) Try it and u promise you will get a lot out of it. I've just started my sliver beacuse that's how much i loved bronze. Xxx

Bring jelly cube on the expedition! Seriously, they will keep you alive Make sure, if possible, that you like your group and your group like you, if you have little-no control over group selection then try to make sure there is at least one person you are friends with in your group. Unfortunately I had a particularly negative experience which my group, who were all close friends and didn't really like or include me, this had left a sour taste in my mouth and I'm worried about doing silver (which I really want to do!) in case the same happens again.

Hey, so basically DofE is an award where do different activities and then an expedition. So I think the main part is the expedition and its basically where you have to walk a certain distance and you cook your own food and sleep in a tent and you can do it in a group of your friends and it's quite fun although it's tiring. For Bronze you do two days and one night, silver is three days two nights and gold is five days and four nights. For the other sections, you have to do a volunteering bit, skills which is like music or baking or anything really and physical which is sporty stuff. You have to do each one for a few months and then someone signs it off for you and then you put all four things together to complete your DofE. For gold to a bit different as it. Says above : you have to do a residential and other stuff I'm not really sure - I'm doing silver at the moment. So yeah I hope this explains it, it's really fun for me especially the expedition and for the volunteering is quite fun as well so you can start doing lots of new things.
